Never stop dreaming...
When I was 10 years old I had a bet with someone in my school class that one day I would make it to the Olympics as a runner... that day is yet to come, but by reaching for the moon (a really big dream!) sometimes we can find ourselves in amongst the stars (or at least, what we personally would classify as 'the stars').
In 1997 when I boarded a flight to the United States to attend university on an athletic scholarship I did not know what to expect. All I knew, was that I had a dream and I wanted to do everything possible to make it a reality. As I walked down the long tunnel at Chicago airport, aged 17, having landed in America for the first time, I knew no-body and I remember saying to myself, 'what are you doing?' — But in my heart, something just felt right.
4 years later I would graduate with a degree in Graphic Design and be married to a man I thought was the most handsome I had ever seen! My life had changed forever...
Not only did I get to run and travel the US for 4-years, I had the opportunity to pursue a degree in Art, something I also loved and discovered a Faith I had never had before.
Upon graduating, I had the privilege of working as a designer for 2 great organisations (and working with some lovely people!) before branching out independently in 2010 — something I would never have opted to do had it not been for the 'dream'.
Starting my own business was a bold move, but something I am so thankful I did. I am still learning 7 years later, but the skills I acquired from the hours of physical (and mental) training have proven invaluable in starting a small design company.
I always envisioned that athletics would be the tool by which my skills would be best used in life. I had hoped that some day I would encourage millions by my sporting endeavours just like Jess Ennis or Kelly Holmes, but sometimes life doesn't work out quite the way we think it will (or at least it can take a lot longer than we think it should)... we all go through many ups and downs, sometimes we question if we will ever make it, but I have learnt that if we keep looking straight ahead, staying positive and focused, good things are in store...
B Uniqu has been birthed from my dream. It combines my passion to give, to share my experiences and a bit of creativity... it is not the Olympics, but it has made me really smile and combines the things I love and am passionate about. So, when I look at how far the running dream has brought me, I can not help but be thankful for the days when I feel like I am living amongst the stars.
Never stop dreaming! x
